A RAND American Life Panel survey asked how often people shopped online last July and August, revealing online shopping became more common as COVID-19 spread across the globe. As the pandemic continues, this trend has persisted, with about 45% of respondents being “frequent,” roughly one-third “occasional” and less than 25% labeling themselves as “infrequent” online shoppers. When it comes to spending patterns, the most noticeable factor is age: Nearly half of people under 35 reported spending more money online than before the pandemic started, while just 31% of people over 65 doing the same.
